Kevin Malligan was holidaying in Indonesia before the New Year and the birth of his second child.
But the dream trip quickly turned into a nightmare after he fell off a scooter being driven by his friend, suffering a brain bleed and fractured neck.
The 24-year-old Sydneysider was rushed to hospital at Nusa Dua where he underwent surgery, and generous Aussies later helped fund his transfer back to NSW alongside wife Leah and other family members.
But in a heartbreaking update, Mr Malligan's mother-in-law Jodie French let well-wishers know that the father-of-two had been pronounced brain dead.
"Our hearts are broken today as Kevin has officially been pronounced as brain dead," she wrote.
"The doctors have done all relevant testing over the last few days."
The family is now faced with the devastating decision of having to turn off Mr Malligan's life support.
Ms French also shared an update from her daughter, and asked for prayers for the whole family during this difficult time.
"Leah would like to thank everyone from the bottom of her heart who has donated, helped, sent messages to help her and the family at this time," she said.
"Leah is so grateful for the financial support to get Kevin home and being able to spend quality time to say goodbye."
More than $117,000 was received from 1300 donations to bring Mr Malligan back to Australia for treatment.
"It would be wonderful to bring this young man home to his family,' one person wrote.
Well-wishers flooded the comments, sending the family thoughts and prayers.
"We have kids of our own and it's unimaginable what you're going through," another person added.
"Wish you all the best. We are praying for you."
It comes just weeks after a South Australian man died in a freak hit-run motorcycle accident in Bali.
Bradley Semmens, 33, was travelling along the Persinggahan Highway in the island's southwest when a speeding motorbike approached him from the opposite lane and collided with his bike.
